The Young Democrats of Lane County is an umbrella organization that unifies people from all different backgrounds and locations. We are comprised of four different bodies: general membership, chapters, caucuses, and the Board of Directors
The only requirements for being a member of YDLC are meeting 20 hours of volunteer work a quarter, and attending the majority of the monthly central YDLC meetings. We separate the year into four terms in which each quarter is three months long. Depending on whether or not it is an election year, we may subject the quarterly system to change based off of the election's time frame.
Members are encouraged to be a part of a local chapter in order to create community, address the specific issues they are facing, and to increase political action among young people in that area. Chapters follow the bylaws of the umbrella organization, but might have their own rules and ways of organizing.
Caucuses are for members to take action on a certain issues that they are passionate about. These are groups of members that focus on a singular issue, or on issues that face a certain demographic of people. Caucuses introduce work on projects such as community outreach, introducing legislation, lobbying for certain bills, or any special project that they choose to work on. Members are not required to be part of a caucus, but are strongly encouraged to join one. Caucuses are composed of it's general members, and one caucus chairperson in order to coordinate effectively with the Board of Directors. Any person can start a caucus, as long as they follow the process set in place by the Board of Directors to establish it.
Board of Directors
The Board of Directors is composed of five members who have participated in YDLC for at least one year and are dedicated to ensure the prosperity of our organization. Board members are democratically elected and each member of YDLC has one vote for each of the five positions. The board is in charge of managing the bylaws, accumulating funds, structural organization, coordinating events, and many other responsibilities. The five positions within the board include the Chairperson, Vice-chair, Treasurer, Programs Director, and Secretary.
We know that this might sound like a lot, and we want to make sure our members are having a positive experience from being part of this organization of young people. If you're unsure if you are able to meet the requirements, we would be more than happy to accommodate for you in any way possible to suit your needs. We want to structure this movement around YOU, because justice cannot be obtained if the movement itself is unjust. If you're unsure about signing up, but you would like to take action, go ahead and fill out the information below and we will be in contact to figure out a plan that suits you.
Remember that we are a grassroots organization that gains it's power from the people. It's time for young people to get involved in the political process because we are the ones who will have to clean up the mess left by our predecessors. We have the power to change the world, it's only a matter of whether or not you choose to make the change.
